No one in Baker City has a more historic family than the Langrell’s. Richard’s first set of great-great grand parents, Clark’s, came to Baker City in 1848, the second set, Grier’s, in 1850. His great grand father Langrell came from County Cork Ireland and was the first settler in Pine Valley, (now Halfway, OR). Langrell built and operated a saw mill. The original saw mill was water powered. The hand dug ditch can still be seen from what is Cornucopia to Carson today. Lynne’s family goes back just as far to the earliest settlers of Ukiah and Portland.
Lynne and Richard operated a construction company for 25 years in Baker City. They built this motel themselves; with 25 years in the construction business no one was better qualified for the job. They also built and operated two restaurants over the years. Both restaurants are still in operation. They have four children, Asa Frances Sterling and Robbie. All of them helped build and get the motel up and running. Robbie their youngest started renting rooms, making room keys, and running credit card charges at the age of 7 without any supervision.
